4. ELIZABETH CARLTON (MARKE, THOMAS CARLETON, JOHN CARLTON) was born April 18, 1701 in Ballyshaken, Ireland, and died Aft. 1760 in Rowan County, NC. She married WILLIAM WHITAKER December 13, 1722 in Kennett Square, Chester County, PA, son of JOSHUA WHITAKER and JANE PARKER. He was born February 10, 1701 in England, and died Aft. 1760 in Rowan County, NC.
Notes for WILLIAM WHITAKER: William Whitaker was born in England in 1701. In about 1716-1717, the family moved to Timahoe, Ireland. They stayed there only a short time and then moved to Dublin. By 1719 William's father, Joshua Whitaker, had been killed on the Isle of Man, and that same year William, aged 18, submitted a request to the monthly meeting of the Quaker Society in Dublin for a Certificate of Removal to Pennsylvania. The Society minutes state, "William Whitaker, formerly of Timahoe, now of Dublin".
Exactly when William Whitaker came to America is not precisely known, but he was received at Kennett Monthly Meeting (then Newark Monthly Meeting), Kennett Square, Chester County, Pennsylvania on December 2, 1721. He was received on his certificate of removal from the Dublin Monthly Meeting.
Shortly after arriving in America, William met Elizabeth Carleton. She was born in Ireland and came to America when she was about ten years of age. On January 5, 1722 they made their first announcement of their intention to marry at Kennett Monthly Meeting. They made their second announcement of their intention to marry on February 2, 1722 at Kennett Monthly Meeting. The actual marriage took place in Kennett Square, Chester County, PA on February 13, 1722, three days after William's twenty-first birthday. The only other Whitaker at this wedding was Peter, William's brother.

Notes for MARK WHITAKER: Mark Whitaker and his brother moved to Fayette and Woodford Counties. From there they settled in Lincoln County, TN, about 1809, where Mark's will was filed in Book 1, pages 208-209, on October 30, 1842.
