1622-1999 FLOYD'S NOTES
I have found documents of a "Zonker" family having arrived before 1790. This lends credibility to the rumor that an uncle was in the U.S.A. before Joseph arrived. I had heard that this uncle had made three or more trips back to Germany to recruit those willing to migrate to the U.S.A. No record found to support this. Joseph and Marie Zongker from Germany, visited relatives in Switzerland before continuing onto the U.S.A. Joseph M. was born there and was six weeks old on arrival in Philadelphia (about June 1, 1818) Joseph Zanker and wife Elizabeth (Rode) came to the U.S.A. from Switzerland in 1818. Their oldest son Anthony Zonker was born at Lancaster, PA Sept. 23, 1818. The Zongkers' of Steuben County Indiania referred to the Zonkers' of DeKalb County as cousins. This brings up the possibility that Joseph Zongker and Joseph Zonker were in fact first cousins, and that they were first cousins to the Zonkers b. in Stratford, Township, New York. Until recently I thought Zonker was a misspelling of Zongker. That only one family came over. Now I have definite documentation of two or more families migrating, but there is reason to believe they were possibly related. 1.1. JOSEPH M. b. April 19, 1818 Microcopy #437 roll #671 shows the household as #55 and Family as #55 Joseph b. in Germany and Regina as b. in PA. Joseph listed as a farmer. JOSEPH M. moved his family to SALEM CENTER, STEUBEN COUNTY, IND. IN 1854. 1860 U.S. CENSUS FOR STUBEN COUNTY, IND. LISTS: JOSEPH ZONGKER AGE 42, BORN IN SWITZERLAND SUSANNA 17, OHIO FAMILY RECORDS ALSO SHOW: MARIE BROUGHT A "FRIENDSHIP" QUILT FROM GERMANY, WHICH SHOWS THE NAME SPELLED "ZANGKER" WITH THE TWO DOTS OVER THE A. The English spelling is Zongker. THEY SPOKE GERMAN, NO ENGLISH, SO IT IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND THE VARIED SPELLING OF THE NAME, PLUS SOME OF THE MICRO FILMS ARE FADED AND DIFFICULT TO READ. BESIDES THEY GENERALLY COULD NOT READ OR WRITE. ABOUT THE TIME OF THE END OF THE CIVIL WAR, WILLIAM VISITED THE FOLKS IN INDIANA, HE CLAIMED TO SPEAK SEVEN LANGUAGES, BUT NON OF THEM ENGLISH. It was after the Civil War that English became the official language of the country. AN EXPLANATION OF THE NUMBERING SYSTEM. EACH COLUMN = A GENERATION. 1. First Generation (Joseph & Marie)
The following I found in the Family Tree Maker's World Family tree Vol. 19 and 24. It was submitted by one of our own. They were in contact with a professional genalogist by the name of Alexander Roth whom resided in Lucern, Switzerland and got their information from his research, both the Zangger and Roth families. For the earlier generations there will be no numbering system but will use * to denote our direct anscestors. Gettnau, Switzerland is located in the county of Lucern. EKZ ** Johann Zangger b.
